HARVEST UPDATE

The 2008 harvest has finished. All told, we crushed a record 930 tons this year at South Coast Winery, with roughly 775 tons of the harvest coming off of our estate vineyards. This harvest definitely separates South Coast Winery from the rest of the valley as the largest “estate grown” wine producer.

We started with a winter that was fairly mild. The winter rains were adequate, even timely. This additional water helped to ensure a good start for the vines, and minimized the need for early irrigation. A record cold snap in March ushered in spring and proved to be more detrimental in Northern California where growers saw as much as 30 to 40% reduction in crop yield. Here in Temecula, yields were only slightly reduced (10-20% in most cases) on mostly white varieties like Chardonnay, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc. Late spring turned hot very quickly as we saw record temperatures in May and June. This heat settled down in July and August, and the early fast growth was tempered by cooler temps. The vines seemed to appreciate this cool down, and the grapes maintained excellent chemistry throughout harvest. Sugars were in-line, acid and pH levels were textbook.

Easy translation: The wines that are now in tank and barrel are without a doubt some of the best South Coast Winery has produced to date.
